The Rebuilding Lives, Restoring Hope Appeal will enable St Mary’s House of Welcome to redevelop its premises and offer the best possible service to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens in our community.
After 50 years of daily use, St Mary’s House of Welcome building is almost derelict and desperately in need of major refurbishment. Due to the condition of the building, substantial ongoing upkeep and costly maintenance is required. Disability access must be improved: wheelchair bound service users cannot access the upper floors. Toilet and shower facilities must be urgently upgraded. The building is hot in summer and cold in winter, with poor ventilation.
The current facilities do not enable us to meet the changing needs of our community. Additional facilities are urgently required, some of these needs include:
A Space for Women , Health Clinic, Education and Training Facilities, Community Centre and Consulting Rooms

We are determined to maintain our commitment to Melbourne’s homeless by providing the best possible services and facilities.
The cost of the redevelopment is estimated to be $5 million
This includes the cost of relocating St Mary’s House of Welcome services whilst the building work is being carried out . Ensuring our services are still available to those that need them throughout the redevelopment is an extremely important part of the process.

St Mary's House of Welcome hosts a vital 'Day Centre' for many of the most disadvantaged people in Melbourne.
We understand, homeless is not merely a matter of housing, but being deprived of the normal supports of home and the skills and knowledge that might be gained there.
St Mary's House of Welcome focuses on supporting those people in need.
We focus on disadvantaged people with normal needs for affection and regard.
We focus on disadvantaged people with a need to belong somewhere.
We focus on disadvantaged people with a need to work and their opportunity to do it in a way that brings a sense of self worth and enjoyment.
We focus on meeting each person's needs. (not just their wants).
We work together in an open atmosphere of acceptance, support and - often - fun.
St Mary's House of Welcome works towards solutions for each person in need.
We consider, how each person, can best be empowered to improve his/her own situation
St Mary's House of Welcome works towards inspiring each person, in need, to develop their own solutions.
We encourage each person to work 'their own plan' that offers support for growth and redevelopment into the larger community.
St Mary's House of Welcome started in 1960 as a soup kitchen.
We have certainly progressed to the very large and vital day centre it is today.
St Mary's House of Welcome continues to provide nutritious three course meals in a dining room setting.
That now includes, both Breakfast and Lunch
St Mary's House of Welcome now provides SO MANY MORE growing amenities, activities and services, such as:

Psychiatric Disability Support
Recreation
Social Workers' Support
Since 1960, St Mary's House of Welcome, remains highly dependent on many, many volunteers and in recent years, financial support from government, philanthropic trusts, foundations, corporates, bequests and individuals.
Thankfully, all will continue, to be a vital part of the focus of St. Mary's House of Welcome as we stand
